A long time ago, carpets like these were made for the court of the Safavids. The fine pieces of persian handycraft belong to the best, that have ever been knotted by hand. Even today carpets are made by hand in Meymey, a small city 100km away from Isfahan. Mey-mey belong to the trilogy of the Dhoshogan-Carpets and are of high quality.
The trilogy of Dshoshogan divides carpets into three categories. Mey-mey are the second best, and therefore they have a high quality. Their density is around 180.000 to 250.000 knots per square meter. The finer Mortshekort carpets reach up to 350.000 knots per square meter. Nevertheless, MeyMey are great carpets, which are being traditionally handknotted in this region for ages. Their provincial pattern is called Djangali, it is geometrical. Also, floral elements are found in most of the cases. The basic colour of Mey-Mey carpets is red. Rarer, the use of blue and beige in the background.
