How are patchwork rugs made?

Patchwork is a creative and sustainable method of using materials that are already available. Many high-quality Oriental rugs, but also those that may have been damaged during the knotting process, are now given a second life as patchwork rugs. Each patchwork rug is created by carefully selecting suitable Oriental rugs to use as pieces. The selected rugs may be relatively new or, more often, several decades old. Some are faded, some have cracks, and some are unsuccessful design prototypes.

The transformation begins once the appropriate Rugs have been found. They are divided into different sections – occasionally creating large, symmetrical fields, occasionally playful, irregular mosaics. To create a coherent overall picture, each piece is carefully selected. Often, the individual components are deliberately reworked – whether it's a gentle colouring, the addition of a vintage patina or the thickening or thinning of the pile – to emphasise the desired look.

Now the real work begins. The individual segments are precisely sewn together by hand. The newly created rugs are often given a stable foundation, such as a cotton cloth backing.
